How to import CSV files into Libre Office Calc?

The IKOSA Platform cumulates quantitative results data in a CSV format, since CSV files offer more flexibility than conventional XLS file formats. These files can be later transferred to different table calculation programs like Libre Office Calc. Yet, you need to convert CSV files into formats native to the spreadsheet program before you can perform actual calculations on them.

Importing CSV files into Libre Office Calc

In order to obtain the data in the desired format, you have to open your CSV file in Libre Office Calc. To do this you have to perform the following steps:

  1. create a blank Libre Office Calc spreadsheet

  2. click “File” in the upper menu

  3. click “Open”

  4. choose the CSV file you want to open

  5. preview your data in the window that opened

    1. Checked separator options should be: tab, comma, semicolon and space

    2. your language should be set to English (if it is, for example, in German, your data might be imported incorrectly)

  6. click “OK” and review your data in the spreadsheet

Important: In the video we show the importance of selecting the right language.

Now your data will appear in a usable format. The values should be properly distributed across the columns of your Libre Office Calc spreadsheet. In Excel, you can further clean and transform your data and start performing calculations on it.
