Configure your system to import CSV files into Microsoft Excel without friction.

You want to run some statistics and plots on data from image analysis applications? A correct import of CSV (comma-separated values) into Microsoft Excel depends on your system configuration, namely, which regional format settings system are currently configured in your Windows operating system.

What to expect from this page?

📑 Region settings in Windows

If your MS Windows region settings are not set to an English locale, you need to take care of setting the correct decimal and thousands delimiters during the CSV import into Excel.

You can check your regional settings in Windows 10 by typing the word “Region” into the search field in the task bar.

Then, check in the region settings the “Regional format” and take a look at the Regional format data below. It contains examples for date, decimal formats, etc.

Important: If you change the regional format, make sure that you restart your applications, e.g. MS Excel to respect the new settings.

📑 Finding your Excel version (Windows)

Go to "File > Account > About Excel" and check on the top of the dialog the version of Excel.

📑 Finding decimal separator settings in Excel

Excel allows you to override the system settings for decimal separators. The number format for displaying decimal data in Excel in can be modified by navigating to “File > Options > Advanced > Use system separators”.

Important: Setting the number format for display in Excel (File > Options > Advanced > Use system separators) does not have any effect on the data import. It is recommended to keep it aligned with the system settings and use the data import wizard to define the separator type.
