📑 Region settings in Windows

If the region settings of your MS Windows operating system are not set to an English locale, you need to set the correct decimal and thousands delimiters (separators) during CSV imports into Excel.

You can check the region settings in Windows 10 by typing in the word “Region” into the search field of your task bar.

Then, in the region settings field open the “Regional format” tab and take a look at the Regional format dropdown lists. Dropdown lists where you can set the appearance of items like date, decimal formats, etc. are provided.

Note

Important: Once you’ve changed the regional format, make sure to restart your running applications, e.g. MS Excel, to adopt the new settings.

📑 Finding your Excel version (Windows)

To find this information go to "File > Account > About Excel" and check your Excel version at the top of the dialog.

📑 Finding the decimal separator settings in Excel

Excel allows you to override the system settings for decimal separators. The number format for displaying decimal data in Excel in can be modified by navigating to “File > Options > Advanced > Use system separators”.

Note

Important: Setting the number format for display in Excel (File > Options > Advanced > Use system separators) does not have any effect on the data import. It is recommended to keep it aligned with the system settings and use the data import wizard to define the separator type.

Now that you’ve adjusted your OS-system settings you are good to go and start the import of CSV - file into Excel. Have fun analyzing your data!
